HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS
Typology- system of classifying HEIs based on their
mandates and functions vis-vis
national development goals.
TYPOLOGY OF HIGHER EDUCATION
INSTITUTIONS
1. Horizontal Typology–based
on functional differentiation
2. Vertical Typology-based on the elements of quality
HORIZONTAL TYPOLOGY
1. Professional Institutions -develop technical
knowledge and skills at the undergraduate
and/or graduate levels that lead to professional practice
2. College -develop adults who have the thinking,
problem solving, decision-making,
communication,
technical and social skills to response to the needs of the communities they
serve.
3. University - develop new knowledge and skills
through research and development
VERTICAL TYPOLOGY
1. Autonomous HEIs - show evidence of outstanding performance consistent with their
horizontal type, e.g., research and publications for universities
2. Deregulated HEIs - show evidence of very good
performance consistent with their
horizontal type.
3. Regulated HEIs - still need to demonstrate good
institutional quality and program
outcomes
